IMPORTANT FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A CAREER

May 16, 2018 by Miriam Dunning Leave a Comment

Choosing a career is not an easy decision since chances are you that’s going to be your occupation for life. You want to find a career that plays to your strengths and talents and is also financially rewarding because bills don’t take care of themselves.

For the sake of your mental and physical health, the career you choose should be fulfilling. That means that you can’t just choose a career because of the earning potential, although this still matters to some extent, but also one that you are passionate about. Passion is what will keep you going during the tough days. Remember you can easily change a boss or an employer but changing careers is usually more life-altering and you therefore need to put some thought into choosing your career.

Here are the factors to consider when choosing a career.

Talent and ability

You need some level of self-awareness to make a good career choice. When making a career decision, ask yourself: What am I good at? What are my strengths and weaknesses?

The reason for this is that you’ll find a career that plays to your natural talents and abilities more enjoyable and less strenuous when performing your duties. You will also excel in your chosen field of work and eventually earn a higher salary.

This does not however mean that you can’t get into certain fields because you lack the requisite skills now to excel in that line of work. You can still follow your heart since with passion and ambition you can always learn new skills needed in a particular line of work.

Career requirements

Different careers have different requirements in terms of education, academic qualifications, skills and experience.

Before you settle on a career, make sure you know what it takes to get into it and excel. For instance, you have to ace your exams and go into medical school and it will take you at least 7 years before you start practicing. Also, to be a dental assistant you have to attend a dental assistant school and pass your exams. See Best-Dentalassistantschools.Com.

Find out what is needed in the career before you make a decision. Are you willing to put in the work and hours required to get into your career?

Nature of work

Before making a decision, you should know what is involved in the career of your choice. You need to know the kind of environment you are likely to work in and what is involved in the career.

Some career like medicine require to work long hours and be on-call for most of the time while others like piloting involve a lot of travelling. There are also those that require you to work closely with people like sales and marketing.

Before you look at the glamorous side of every profession, ask yourself if you would be okay doing whatever is involved in the career.

Opportunities

Evaluate the opportunities available in your chosen career path before you make your decision. Find out about the employment opportunities available in the profession locally, nationally and internationally.

Some careers require you to move cities or even countries since there are no available job opportunities in your preferred city.

Also, look at the earning potential and career growth opportunities for the career.
